Mara Mastalir was born in Vienna, Austria. As a member of children’s choirs as well as a child soloist she sang in many of Vienna’s great concert halls at a young age. She also performed main roles in various theatre productions, movies, and television shows. Her first role in an opera was Mrs. Sam in Die Sintflut (Britten).

 

A student of Manfred Equiluz, Mara completed her Masters degree at the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität in 2008. While there she also studied Opera (Michael Pinkerton) as well as Lied and Oratorio (Carolyn Hague, Uta Schwabe and Birgid Steinberger). Additionally, the young soprano has participated in masterclasses with artists including Angelika Kirchschlager, Roman Trekel, Michael Schade, Marjana Lipovsek, Robert Holl and Elly Ameling.

 

In 2008, Mara Mastalir was a winner in the international competition Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg (Germany), where she sang the role of Jenny in Die weiße Dame (Boieldieu). Mara has won prizes at several other international competitions including the Fidelio-Wettbewerb (Vienna), Ferruccio Tagliavini (Deutschlandsberg, Austria), Oper Schloss Laubach (Germany), Kultursalon Hörbiger (Vienna), Musica Juventutis (Vienna). She was also a finalist in the international BRD-Musikzauber Liedwettbewerb in Bayreuth in 2008.

 

In January 2009 she sang Sandrina in La finta giardiniera (Mozart) at the New National Theatre of Tokyo.

In June 2009, Mara made her debut at the Vienna Volksoper as Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss). She was an ensemble member of this opera house from 2009 until 2022 and created the roles of Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Pamina in The Magic Flute (Mozart), Clorinda in La Cenerentola (Rossini), Marzelline in Fidelio (Beethoven), Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck), Laura in Der Bettelstudent (Millöcker), Annina in Eine Nacht in Venedig (Strauß), Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow (Lehar) or Carlotta in Gasparone (Millöcker). 

In June 2011, the soprano made her debut at the Wiener Festwochen, where she was also heard in 2013.

At the Festival Retz the singer also succeeded in baroque Repertoire in the roles of Ismene in Orpheus in der Unterwelt (Telemann) and Abra in Juditha Triumphans (Vivaldi).

In January 2015 Mara Mastalir made her Debut as Micaela in Carmen (Bizet) at the Vorarlberger Landestheater Bregenz, celebrated by audience and critiques.

In summer 2017, the soprano sang Gräfin Zedlau in Wiener Blut (Strauß) at the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich, in the same year she made her Debut at the Staatsoperette Dresden as Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart).

 

 

Mara Mastalir performs all over the world as concert and oratorio soloist and in Lied Recitals. She sang several times at the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Goldener Saal of the Wiener Musikverein (e.g. the Soprano part in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony). 2014 the soprano was heard as Hanne in Haydn's Jahreszeiten at the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt and performed this part again at the Bregenzer Festspielhaus and the Montforthaus Feldkirch an 2017.

 

Mara Mastalir works with internationally known artists like Stefan Vladar, Omer Meir Wellber, Marco Arturo Marelli, Rolando Villazon, Luc Bondy or Philipp Stölzl.

 

During the current season Mara Mastalir will perform Lisa in Gräfin Mariza (Kalman) at the Musiktheater of the Landestheater Linz. She will also give her debut at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg as Hanne in Haydn's Jahreszeiten in June 2023.
